Have you ever visited Gardenieres?  It is a fantastic site featuring great projects and tips for your garden.

Is there a garden project you would like to take on this fall?  I checked out the project videos over at Gardenieres, and one of my favorite ideas is to to plant an orchard.  In the following video Teena tells you a little bit about the foods in her orchard:

I have always thought it would be great to grow some of our own food in the back yard.  When I was a kid, we grew corn and tomatoes in our yard for a little while, and I always had relatives who grew various crops.

Today my dad has some apple trees and pear trees in his yard.  And we have a pecan tree in our own back yard.  Last year I picked up some pecans from our back yard and used them in my cakes. It would be great to add some apple or pear trees to our own yard.  I imagine it would make for some great baking ingredients!

While the weather is cooling down, the fall season brings you the chance to bring bright fall colors of red, orange, and yellow to your kitchen table in the form of food and centerpieces, as well as warm colors to your home decor and outdoor space.

Every year I look forward to decorating to decorating my front porch with scarecrows, pumpkins, and fresh mums!

Here’s a picture of an entryway that I love:

As you can see they used a mum in a hanging basket on each side, and then they lined the steps with potted mums, white pumpkins, and lovely red candle holders.  It is a very simple concept, and it would be very easy and inexpensive to implement.  I’d also love to see other colors added to this, especially yellow.

Fall gardening and planting flowers like the mums pictured here is a snap with great products from Scotts Miracle-Gro.

You can easily pot your own mums with Miracle-Gro Moisture Control Potting Mix.  It feeds plants for up to six months:

Stylish Contemporary Furniture

Several weeks ago, I highlighted some of my favorite items from Decorativ, a site which deals in affordable contempoary furniture and decor, offering stylish and affordable items from top manufacturers at 40 to 70% off retail.

Today I’m looking at some of their living room furniture.  The living room is where a lot of us spend the majority of time with the family, and it is also the place where guests will spend most of the time in our homes.  For this reason, I tend to spend more time making sure our living room always looks great.

And because the living room is the center of the house, the furniture and decor in this room really say a lot about you and serve as a foundation for the mood and atmosphere of the entire house.

Choosing Green Solutions

With a view to protecting our environment and while searching for home cleaning solutions that eliminate the need for chemicals, I came across a green carpet cleaner  on this website.

Cleanly designed, the products reflect a simple and cost-effective principle in home and office carpet cleaning. Using natural ingredients without chemicals such as Sodium Laurel Sulfate, Sodium Laureth Sulfate and Perfluorooctanesulfonic Acid, all of which are frequently found in most common carpet and upholstery cleaners, and all of which are known to be detrimental to our health and environment, the green carpet cleaner manufactured and used by the Green Choice Carpet provides a safe and effective alternative.

Motivated by the drive to create organic and safe products, the company strives to deliver superb cleaning results on a variety of surfaces in the home and office. It also seeks to provide these at a reasonable cost to the consumer by using trained and skilled staff, not hired contractors. Cleaning of carpets, rugs, upholstery, leather, mattresses as well as effective air duct cleaning is offered. Additionally, repair of water damage, prevention of mold and mildew in damaged rugs or carpets is also undertaken.

Ingredients used in the manufacture of the green cleaning line of products are derived from nature and stated clearly on the products.

The service is available widely and accessed easily through their website. The site is designed as cleanly as the products and well-trained and knowledgeable staff are on hand to answer any questions.

My Do-Over Moment: Gum in the Dryer (and How to Remove It!)

When I was a kid, my dad would do laundry, and sometimes my money would get washed in my pants pocket.  He would remind me over and over to check and empty my pockets before putting things in the clothes hamper, and I ‘d always complain and say, “Why can’t you check them?”

Fast forward several years later! My Do-Over Moment:

I’d been married for about a year, and we’d just bought a washer and dryer.  It was slightly used, but very new to us.  I think we’d had the set for about a month, when I opened the dryer one day and found the entire inside was covered in gum! It was cinnamon gum from my husband’s shorts pocket!

Miraculously none of the clothes were ruined.  The shorts with the gum inside the pocket had to be re-washed, and there were a couple of other pieces that had trace amounts of gum on them, but this was easily removed.  However, I had a dryer filled with dried gum!

So of course I did what any good blogger or modern housewife would do.  I ran to the internet to search for ways to get rid of the gum!  I found two solutions which worked very well for me.  Here they are:

Baking Soda:  In a bowl, make a solution of baking soda and water. Place the solution in the dryer, and use a washcloth to rub and scrub te dryer. This will loosen the gum and rub it away.

Dryer Sheets:  For small amounts of gum or for places where you’ve used the baking soda method but still have trace amounts of gum, take a dryer sheet and rub. Gum will become loose and stick to the dryer sheet.

Apart from these two tips, I’ve also learned that it’s a good idea to check all pockets before doing laundry.  I’ve asked my husband to try and remove things from his pockets, and at the same time, I try to check them myself before putting them in the wash.  I think this is a good compromise, and hopefully if everyone works together we can avoid this mistake in the future!

Guest Article: DIY – Design It Yourself

Finding the right furniture for your home can be a nightmare, especially when you have something very personal and specific in mind. The colours don’t seem to match, the price is far too high, or the detailing just isn’t quite right. Sound familiar? Buying furniture is a huge investment and should be given a great deal of thought. After all, each piece will add to a certain atmosphere within the room, which will become your living space for years to come. In these cases, perhaps doing it your self is the best option? However unlikely this may sound, it is actually a possibility. Have you ever fancied your self a bit of an interior designer? Be your qualifications professional or non-existent, the Fashion for Home website is now offering anyone the opportunity to have their own designs brought to life.

Simply upload your design via the Fashion for Home Design Hub, where it will be included in a Voting Area. Fashion for Home customers will be able to give feedback as well as vote on their favourite designs, which may eventually be made and sold on the Fashion for Home website, with a commission per sale for the designer!

Whether you are an established interior designer or just someone with a desire to see their own ideas made into real objects, but without the know-how to accomplish that alone, this platform seems to me the best option. Even if your design doesn’t get the votes you feel it should, seeing other people’s designs might open up your mind to a world of other possibilities for your home. Equally, Evolvex offers the opportunity to customise and design your own furniture online at very affordable prices.
