Turn Your Clutter Into Cash

This summer I have a lot of home improvement and home makeover projects. One of these projects is to clean out our outbuilding, and one way we are doing that is by having a big yard sale next. Do you declutter? The infographic below tells a little bit of info on just how much unnecessary clutter people have in their homes. Very interesting!

Living Room Makeover with SureFit

Surefit Makeover

Today I am excited to share a very easy, yet beautiful (if I do say so myself) living room makeover!  I recently received got a slipcover for my couch from the great folks at Sure Fit, and I am so happy with the transformation.  I purchased a slipcover for my recliner a year or so ago, and so I’ve been wanting to get a matching slipcover for the couch.

Let’s start with the chair.  As I said, I bought this from Sure Fit a while back, and it still looks pretty great, and then I just purchased this new throw pillow, just to add a little color and style: [Read more…]

Fighting Stains with OxiClean: Review & Giveaway

OxiClean Giveaway

A week or two ago, I started going through clothes for my upcoming, and much anticipated yard sale, and I also rearranged all my closets and drawers, putting away winter clothes, and getting those spring and summer clothes organized and accessible.  Whenever I do my semi-annual clothes clean ups, I usually find there are a few things that need to be thrown in the washer for a little freshening up.  Enter OxiClean!

I’ve been seeing OxiClean advertised on television for years, but I only just recently tried one of their products.  The company has a number of powdered and liquid detergents for clothing and dish washing.  In my case, I tried the White Revive Laundry Stain Remover.

The product comes in a small 3 pound tub, which is enough for 45 loads.  As you can imagine from the name, it is especially designed to remove stains and keep your whites bright.  But unlike other whitening products, the OxiClean is chlorine free, has no harsh odors, and is safe to use on colored clothes.  And it is also dye and scent free, which means it is safe to use on baby clothes and on items for people with sensitive skin and allergies.

Personally I was happy with the results I got from this detergent.  It did a great job of cleaning the clothes.  Plus, I know a lot of people don’t like the fruity or flowery smells that go along with other detergents, so if you are one of those people, this detergent would certainly be to your liking in that regard.

Giveaway! One Simply Sweet Home reader will win a box of OxiClean detergent.

I’m currently researching and shopping for ideas to makeover various areas of my home.  Last week I told you that I was specifically looking around for items to put in my living and I shared some of my favorite trends in wall decor.  I just got a brown slip cover for my couch, and now I believe I’ve narrowed it down and decided that I want a color scheme of brown and blue-green for my living room.

I’ve been looking at rugs and I found a great selection at Kalaty.com.  Kalaty has all hand made and mostly hand knotted rugs.  The Oriental rug businesses started in the early 1900s in Iran and came to the United States in 1979.  Today it is still a family business, and as such, they have a focus on high quality design.

Their designs include contemporary and classic patterns.  Just a few that I think you’d love include the Verona, the Sierra, the Majave, and the Caspian, but they are all truly great!

Check out this video for information on the company:

Often the couch or entertainment center is dubbed as the focal point of the room, around which everything else is centered; however, a rug can be just as imporant.  A great rug can grab your attention and draw your eye in.  It can also provide contrast.  For example, if you have a brown or black couch, a brightly colored rug, could really make the room pop.  And if you have a  a lot of similar colored accent pieces in the room (vases, lamps, wall art), that rug can really bring everything together and create a cohesive color scheme or theme.

To illustrate what I’m talking about, I created a collage and inspriration board of decorative items, inspired by a rug at Kalaty.com.  Since I’m leaning towards blue and brown for my living room colors, I decided to chec out some items that would go great along side this Tibetan Weave Rug:

I’m currently looking for items with a modern and chic look, with perhaps a little “shabby chic” thrown in to the mix.  Here are a few ideas:

Getting Ready for Gardening Season with Blooming Secrets

flower basket

Any time we can, we like to work on do it yourself projects to improve our home inside and out. But sometimes I get a little intimidated at the prospects of certain projects.  My biggest fear is that I will start a project and run in to a road block along the way.  Potential road blocks include needing more tools and materials (which means I need to spend more money),  getting in to a point in the project and finding that I don’t know what I’m doing or cannot complete the project,  or “completing” the project but finding that I didn’t get the results I was looking for.

Gardening and landscaping are projects that are quite involved and can be intimidating.  Not only do you have a lot of work to do in the hot sun while you dig in the dirt and carry heavy materials and supplies around, but at the end of the day, you are going to have something that everyone in the neighborhood will be seeing, so of course, you are hoping that it looks perfect. April Showers Bring May Flowers… and a Ton of Home Damage!

handy-infographic-031214

As the common adage goes, “April showers bring May flowers” but this year’s storm season is proving to bring much more than fresh blooms along with it. Families across the country were faced with heavy rain and snow this winter, and these harsh winter extremes show no signs of settling down. The National Weather Service has attributed the costs of U.S. property damages caused by rain to total approximately $2.85 million dollars every year, with more intensive flash flooding resulting in an additional $374.49 million dollars in property damages each year.

To see how important these weather patterns are to your household and to help you decide if preventative handyman services are needed for your home this season, let’s take a look at the National Climatic Data Center’s compilation of key areas affected by heavy rainfall:

Major US Cities With Over 45 inches of Precipitation Each Year:

1. New Orleans, Louisiana – 62.7 inches

2. Miami, Florida – 61.9 inches

3. Birmingham, Alabama – 53.7 inches

4. Memphis, Tennessee – 53.7 inches

5. Jacksonville, Florida – 52.4 inches

Major US Cities With Over 130 Days of Rain/Snow Each Year:

1. Rochester, New York – 167 days

2. Buffalo, New York – 167 days

3. Portland, Oregon – 164 days

4. Cleveland, Ohio – 155 days

5. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – 151

Areas like the Pacific Northwest, the Northern East Coast, and the South will receive the brunt of this year’s April showers. Families in these regions are the most susceptible to property damages caused by intense weather conditions, but households across the country can universally benefit from a few key handyman repair services and DIY projects to help protect homes from costly weather damages:

* Regardless of location, all families should be equipped with a household emergency supply kit as well as a communication and evacuation plan in case of emergency situations. This is the simplest and most cost-effective DIY way to prepare for the storm season.

* Local handyman services in your area can install ‘check valves’ on piping to prevent the backup of excess water and help keep your home’s drainage system running smoothly even under heavy rainfall.

* DIY homeowners can consider purchasing waterproof sealant from a local home improvement store, helping protect and seal sensitive walls in rooms like the basement or attic.

* Checking your roof for damaged shingles, broken seals, and clogged rain gutters can help prevent leaks and overflows that can lead to costly interior damage if not properly prevented. Consider using experienced handyman repair services to ensure safety when assessing risk-prone areas like high roofs.

* To avoid overflowing your garden and yard and to reduce the risk of potential damage to land and foundation, make sure to manually adjust your sprinkler systems to minimize watering times and days when not needed.

From Alabama to Oregon, homeowners across the country are gearing up for a cold and wet season of April showers this year. Use a mix of household DIY projects and professional handyman repair services to ensure that your home is just as prepared as you and your loved ones are for the upcoming spring weather. DIY projects can be completed with simple tools and supplies you can find at your local home improvement store, while professional handyman services from industry leaders like Handyman Connection are experienced in serving your regional area’s needs and can help tailor your home improvement goals to seasonal weather upkeep. A perfect balance that will ensure your home effortlessly survives the upcoming April showers, letting you and your loved ones enjoy the May flowers soon to come with safety, comfort, and peace-of-mind.

Busting Myths of Home Decor

With springtime right around the corner, it is time to start thinking about chores for spring cleaning.  And while you’re planning these projects, it is also a good time to take a look at your home decor and consider some new items and improvements in this area.  I’m not talking about weekend long projects or anything high budget (although it can be a great time for that too!).  Instead I’m talking about small, simple improvements such as replacing your own accent rugs for new ones, or getting new curtains, wall art, or throw pillows. Or you may just want to declutter a room and do a little rearranging to change the look of things. [Read more…]
