Upcoming Events at Simply Sweet Home

Hey everyone! I have a few announcements to make! First of all, I am currently planning a new weekly event for this blog. I’d really love to add more interactivity to the site. Plus I love attending blog events each week, and I had so much fun hosting the Holly Bloggy! I’ve been brainstorming and kicking around some ideas for the past several months, and I’ve finally come up with a feature idea that I think will be fun for one and all!

The event will be called Friday Favorites. To participate, just link up your favorite post of the week. This is pretty much wide-open. You can link up a recipe, a craft, baby pictures, a project, a tip, a deal you found, just about anything (family friendly of course). Or if you have a “Favorites” event at your blog you can link up at that post. (I know some of you have posts where you feature your favorite links, write about your favorite things from the week, etc.) It’s entirely up to you.

Also, for the event I will be featuring posts from you guys! To be eligible to get featured, you just have to link up at the event or be a follower of my blog. Each week I’ll visit everyone who links up and some of my followers, and then I’ll pick items to feature for the next week. This will help me get to know you guys better, and it should create new traffic for all of us.

I will launching this event next week. The post will be published late next Thursday night, and you will have until the following Wednesday to link up you posts. I’ve also created a button for the event. You don’t have to use it to link up. I only require that you add a link to my blog on your post so that others will know about the event.  I welcome your comments and questions, and I hope to see you here next for the first party.

Business Event – For Bloggers & Shop Owners – Next Week

Secondly, did you guys know that February is National Start a Business Month? I know we have a lot of readers who own their own businesses or blog to make money, so next week I’ll be devoting some time to post on some business topics that should be helpful to you guys. Among these posts there will be 2 guest articles from writer Christy Strauch. Christy is the author of Passion, Plan, Profit: 12 Simple Steps to Turn Your Passion into a Solid Business.  All month long Christy is having a virtual book tour, and I’m proud to say that Simply Sweet Home was chosen as one of the tour hosts! Christy sent me a copy of her new book a couple of weeks ago, and it’s excellent! (I’ll be reviewing it some time in the next month or so.) And I’m really pleased to be having Christy here next week to provide you with some insight and advice!

Does Your Kitchen Look Like a Post-It Commercial? Declutter Your Fridge and Bulletin Boards Today!

Do you guys post stuff on your fridge? Or do you have bulletin board in your kitchen for posting important items? I’ve always tried to keep our refrigerator neat and clutter-free, just posting something on it here and there. On the side of our fridge, I posted a few “important coupons” and some diabetes-related stuff for my husband who was just diagnosed back in November. Then all of a sudden…Boom! The refrigerator starts looking like a cluttered desk! A couple of weeks ago I was doing a general decluttering in the house, and I decided that this just wasn’t working:
I removed all the papers, coupons, and some of the magnets, leaving my little Menu Planner Board, a couple of magnetic notepads, and just a couple of cute magnets behind on the fridge. Much better!
So where did all the papers go?? They were moved to a secret location known only to a select few. I’m pleased to present the inside of the cabinet doors.
I remember when I was little my mom had a list of important phone numbers posted inside of our cabinets and a calendar. It’s a great place to post things where you can see them, yet still keep them hidden from the rest of the world. (And now every time hubby opens the cabinet to get out his meds, his blood sugar testing chart is right there in his face.)
And here’s my favorite part! I have a coupon binder for most of my coupons, but I like to keep a few really good ones out so that I will not forget to use them. I took all the coupons off the refrigerator and placed them in this “handy dandy coupon pocket.”

To make the pocket, I simply took a business envelope and folded back the flap. Then I just placed tape on the edges of the envelope (bottom & sides) and hung it up inside the cabinet. Because the envelope is extra wide you can place a bunch of coupons side by side and overlap them one behind the the other so that you can see several at one time. Here there’s only 6-7 coupons, but I’ve since added a bunch of others to the pack. This is also a great way to keep up with appointment cards.
So there you have it! A solution for decluttering that pesky fridge or bulletin board while taking advantage of all that empty (& hidden) space within your cabinets!

Homemade Alfredo Sauce

One of my favorite things to eat is Alfredo Pasta!  When we lived in South Alabama there was a locally owned place called Pintoli’s that had the best!  And now we frequent a place called Roman Rooster, and their pasta could easily rival our old place. (And not to mention, their pizza is the best I’ve ever had! But I digress…) 
But when I want to cook pasta at home, I use the alfredo sauce recipe that I’m sharing with you today.  I found this recipe nearly a year ago over at Amy’s Finer Things. This goes great with all kinds of pasta and meat.  We usually do Chicken Fettucini Alfredo, but over the weekend I served the sauce with egg noodles and tiny shrimp.  It was excellent!

Recipe for Homemade Alfredo Sauce:
Ingredients:
 1/2 c. butter (1 stick)
 1 (8 oz.) package cream cheese, softened
 2 tsp. garlic powder
 2 cups Half and Half
 6 oz. grated Parmesan cheese (shredded, not powder)
 pepper to taste
basil and/or parmesan for serving (optional)
Directions:  Melt the butter in a saucepan. Add cream cheese and garlic powder. Stir together until smooth.  Add half and half, cheese, and pepper. Stir until combined and smooth. If the sauce is thicker than you like, thin with a little milk. Serve over your favorite pasta, and season as desired.
