Teacher Easter Basket Tutorial

March is here, and Easter is just around the corner! (It’s March 27 this year!)  It’s time to gather up your favorite Easter goodies and create some fun Easter Baskets!  Of course, the Easter Bunny has the kids covered, but what about the adults?  Are there any special adults in your life that would get a little joy out of an Easter basket this year?  Perhaps a neighbor, a grandmother, or a teacher?

As someone who always “loved school” and “loved learning” I’ve always had a huge appreciation for teachers.  In fact, when I was kid I either wanted to be a writer or a teacher, and if I wasn’t working from home, I’d likely be teaching English or history.  That being said, I generally love the profession, and I appreciate everything that the teachers in our local schools do.

Generally the kids give gifts to the teachers at Christmas and at the end of the school year, but I personally love giving gift baskets, and what better time to give one than at Easter?  If you happen to be the head room mother, this is something great that you can give as a class gift to your teacher!  If you have an adult child or other relative who’s a teacher, it could be a great project to put together for them as well.  Today I’m going to show you how I put together a fun Teacher Easter Basket using MARS & Wrigley’s products and other items.  Plus, I’ve got some free printable tags that you can add to your baskets! 10 Outdoor Projects for Your Spring To Do List

Spring is almost here, and you know what that means!  It’s almost time to get out and work in the yard!  At our house, my hubby does the mowing and the majority of the yard work, but I do assist him with a lot of projects, particularly things like working in the flower beds and any project that involves building, painting, and making our yard and home prettier.

Last year we did a number of simple budget-friendly projects to improve the look of our yard and front porch area, and this year we will be continuing our work.  We have some general maintenance to do this spring, and then I hope we can accomplish a few new goals this year as well!  Today I’m going to share 10 outdoor projects for your spring to do list! 5 Easy Ways to Get Your Lawn and Garden Ready for Spring

lawn image 1

For anyone who adores gardening, winter can be a form of torture. Unless you have a greenhouse where you can while away the frigid months caring for your seedlings, chances are that you gaze out at the frosty landscape and dream of spring.

Spring and gardening go hand in hand, but until you can dig your hands deep into the soil and feel the warm sun on your back as you plant to your heart’s content, there are things that can and should be done to your lawn and garden to get them into top shape for planting.

These winter garden preparations not only create the best possible environment for your spring planting, but they also can help cure that burning desire that every gardener has to be outside digging and weeding, even if there is still no sign of spring. [Read more…]

5 Tips for Menu Planning Success

Have you ever struggled to get dinner on the table?  Have you ever felt like your head was spinning after being asked the question, “What are we having for dinner?”  Has the subject of dinner ever started an argument in your house?  If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you probably need to start menu planning!

Now before we start, I have to confess that I am not a die-hard menu planner.  I don’t spend a lot of time making out a plan, and when I make a plan I like to leave myself some wiggle room.  Sometimes things come up, and we just don’t have the time or frankly, we don’t feel like cooking!  I also reserve a right to change my mind and my husband reserves a right to change his mind, and when that happens, we divert from the plan!  BUT…overall I find that the week goes a lot smoother when I have a menu planned out.

On one hand it’s good to know what I will be cooking each day, so I can properly schedule my cooking around the day’s events.  Secondly, by making a menu plan, I can ensure that I have all the groceries I need for the week.  (No more eating out, because we’re missing key ingredients!)  Third, I can actually save money on my groceries, because I will only buy the items on the list I’ve made, and the list is based on my menu plan! Deep Spring Cleaning: The Grungy Garage

garage image 1

After a long few months stuck indoors due to impossibly terrible cold weather, it is intensely pleasing to scour the house of dust and grime and breathe the fresh, warm spring air. Yet, most people don’t go nearly deep enough in their spring cleans. Though your kitchen, living room, bedrooms, and bathrooms definitely deserve your attention after winter, your garage needs just as much TLC ― if not more.

If you are like most people, you have not cleaned or organized your garage since you moved in. This spring, you can finally wrest control of this space, so you can maximize your storage and minimize your waste and clutter. [Read more…]

Eating Healthier – The Perfect BBQ

Grilled Chicken

With so many of us focused on better living and a healthier lifestyle, we have become more aware of the need to enjoy a more balanced diet. Reduced fat, this, low cholesterol, organic, free range, or no added sugar, the list goes on. All of these options are being used on food labels to market and promote a healthier way of eating.

A better idea is to simply cook our food in a way which is healthier. One of these ways is very traditional, one that you probably already know. It brings us and nature together and allows us to have fun with friends and family outdoors – the barbecue or BBQ for short! If you’re curious about how this style of cooking can taste in a city setting, consider how a barbecue restaurant london brings fire-cooked, smokehouse flavours to life in the heart of the city. Chefs grill steaks over live fire, smoke meats low and slow, and build bold, smoky dishes that show just how vibrant and satisfying live-fire cooking can be.

Choosing the right food to cook at your BBQ

The right cut of meat is one way of reducing fat content, especially in things like sausages. When selecting your meat, choose chicken breast or tenderloins over wings or thighs, as well as lean steaks.

If you make your own burger patties, use extra lean minced meat to ensure a lower fat content. Try to avoid high-fat-content sausages. Despite being heavily laden with fat, they also tend to make the BBQ smoke more and increase the chances of BBQ ‘flare ups’ (when fat is exposed to high temperatures, like an open flame). It is also a good idea to add more seafood to the list of BBQ grilled food. Prawns, calamari, or white fish fillets are great cooked on the grill, and have lower calories than a lot of meats. See more other recipes that you can cook with seafood to serve to your guests. Cooking vegetables on the grill is also a great addition, and the added aroma will be an interesting sensation for the taste buds.

Fewer Sauces and More Greens!

The more traditional heavyweights such as potato, coleslaw or even pasta salads are packed with carbohydrates and / or fat. Try to add an interesting range of green leaf salads, with a mixture of different types of lettuce. Or, even go for something like beetroot, or green bean salads. Green leafy salads and lettuce are packed full of vitamins and precious minerals, which are healthy for you.

Barbecues are normally awash with different types of sauces that are also packed full of sugars and carbs. Try to create some simple dressings with extra virgin olive oil or lemon, which will enhance the flavours but also help with digestion.

Be Safe!

There are many unfortunate accidents when lighting or handling a barbecue. To reduce this risk, we suggest that you place your barbecue in a safe place before you even begin. The barbecue is normally the focal point of any gathering, but remember fires can start in a split second.

Make sure you set your BBQ up on a level ground and away from bushes, plants or anything combustible.

When you are lighting your barbecue, be sure to have an extinguisher handy, and try to use prepackaged lighting aids to avoid spraying flammable liquids onto naked flames. Many incidents are caused by flash flames, through the use of the wrong type of lighting fuel. A barbecue is supposed to be fun – practice being safe and this can avoid any incidents.

The right grill for you!

Choosing the right type of barbecue to sit with your outdoor furniture is something else you may want to consider. These days there are many new types of grill on the market that use different types of fuel.

If you are thinking of planning a summer barbecue perhaps now is the time to shop online and check out some of the latest ranges on offer.

Taco Soup

Taco Chili

In recently weeks, I’ve been enjoying a lot of comfort food with my family, including a few batches of soup!  I love soup, because it is a great way to get a good mix of protein, veggies, and often carbs in one meal.  Soups are also easy to make, generally speaking.  And soups go a long way!  You can use them to feed a large group, have a leftover meal (or meals), share with a sick friend, neighbor or family member, or you can freeze leftovers for a later time.

A couple of weeks ago I made up a batch of Taco Soup.  If you like chili, it’s pretty much very similar to chili, except that you use taco powder and ranching seasoning mix instead of chili powder.  The recipe I had actually called for a lot more things that what I used.  For example, it had 2 cans of green chilis and an additional can of tomatoes.  Since I didn’t use these ingredients, it made the soup very chunky like a stew, so I decided to add some broth to mix!

I just so happened to have some chicken broth on hand, so that is what I used.  I know the soup contains beef, but I figured chicken broth is good in everything, so why not try it?  Of course, it turned out great.  The soup tasted good, and it had a great consistency.  I think two cups of water would have worked just as well, and beef broth is another potential option that I’d try to you are unsure about using the chicken broth. But I personally recommend it!

Hope you enjoy this recipe!  And if you like, please check out my Salsa Chili!
